Students came into our club meeting area very excited wth huge smiles on their faces. We separated our 31 members into teams of three and one team of four. They are teams with combined third and fourth graders. The teams first came up with a team name for themselves and then named their Dash and Dot robots to correspond with their team name. Some examples include: The Candy Club with robots Jolly Rancher and Lollipop, The Ghostbusters with Slimer and Stay-puft Man and The Minecrafters with Steve & Alex. Students labeled their robots and boxes and received and Ipad number for the machine they will be using to program their new robotic friends.
At our first club meeting we also talked about the differences between the Dash and Dot robots. We looked at each robot closely and read information about each. While using a Venn Diagram we noted the differences and similarities between the two of them.
To end our club meeting students brainstormed a list of Club Rules that we should have in place in order to make our club experience a positive one. Students came up with really good ideas and were especially interested in rules that would protect and keep the robots safe. We could tell that the kids saw our robotics club as being a special privilege and want to keep these robots in good lasting, condition.
We ended our time together with a short parent meeting describing what our club was all about and what we could expect as the year progresses. Parents signed up for snacks for the month of November and we could tell that they were almost as excited about this opportunity as their kids were! The slide show presentation below was used at the meeting.
